What is CSS Web Design ?
Chris, August 16, 2007
Not Rated
The majority of web pages are written using HTML (Hypertext Markup Language). HTML was invented by The European Laboratory for Particle Physics to allow researchers to exchange structured documents through a network of computers. By structured documents, we mean organising a text document with different levels of headings, paragraph and lists or creating tables to handle tabular data (a bit like in Excel), and linking it to other documents in a non-linear manner (Hyperlinks). HTML is cross-platform : because HTML pages are text only files, any computer can read it, whatever system the user is using (for example Linux, Windows or Mac).
However, in the 1990's and the very rapid development of the world wide web, a problem began to appear.

Imagine you're driving along and due to a road closure you have to follow those conspicuous yellow detour signs. You're now on an unfamiliar road, but because of the signs you confidently proceed, comfortable in trusting the arrows to tell you where you need to go.
Then there's a roundabout and no sign. Do you turn left? Right? You're lost and have two choices; turn back and find an alternate road you know well or blindly drive around and hope for the best.

Web Development

The most common error most new comers to the world of website development make, is to confuse web design and web development. Both are interlinked but are completely different entities, and a company that offers web design does not always necessarily offer web development. The two aspects in creating a web site are listed below:
a) Web Design
Web design is related to the actual design of the web site, i.e. The colours, the images, the positioning of various elements like images etc. Web design is a more creative and an artistically influenced aspect of creating a web site. A well designed site does not necessarily mean its a well developed site, in fact this is the reason why most web development and web design companies, build all sites from scratch, there by insuring that design and development go hand in hand.

If one wants to create good websites, which have high quality, then using web templates is the best option. They are not only cost effective when it comes to the design, but it is also the fastest way to create the site. As with the norm of creating a website, there will be many problems that one has to solve to make it perfect.
This is because when it came to the earlier ways of designing, the site had to be developed from scratch. This will include all the technical problems as well as design problems. But with the web templates it is totally different. All one has to do is simply apply the easy applications, and a web site is available.

Vim and Emacs are not dedicated development tools, but still, they offer a fair number of features for editing HTML and, in fact, any language you may use for web development. They both support syntax highlighting (HTML, PHP, Python, Perl, CSS and many others) and offer support for editing files on remote machines. Both programs are very versatile and can be extensively customized because they support numerous scripts and extensions to extend their functionality. However, both programs are complex tools and present a very steep learning curve.

The 8 Things You Must Know To Build A Great Website
Tim Knox, August 4, 2007

Last week we talked about how a bad website can do your business more harm than good. That column brought several emails asking what is the key to building an effective business website. I replied with the same answer I always give: building an effective business website is a simple matter of definition.
Before the first graphic is drawn or the first line of code is written, you must define the website's budget, purpose, target audience, design, navigation, and content. And when that's all said and done you must define the marketing that will bring visitors to your site.

It is a big help in commerce industry because by using the web, sellers and traders now have a wider range to market their products and services. It also advantageous for the consumers because they do not have to go to different places to canvass or compare prices and to waste time to check out the products they are interested in. Just by sitting and clicking the mouse and some hits on the button, they could already go to different sites and make a comparison of the product's amount.
